Anansi is a mythical animal of African origin which are many stories about. The stories are passed down from generation to generation for centuries. Anansi is a clever, cunning spider with magical powers. During slavery, when slaves were forbidden to express their own culture, the little clever Anansi became the symbol of silent resistance, of 'he who is not strong must be clever'. The character Tiger in Anansi's stories thus became the symbol of the oppressor or slaveholder, because Tiger is strong, but stupid. The stories were secretly told by slaves to each other to give comfort and distraction from the woes of everyday life.
In this issue about Anansi, his stories are told in an accessible way that will appeal to everyone. In simple language, but maintaining the tradition of these wonderful and funny old folk tales.
