Children with dyscalculia are children in whom the normal laws of learning do not work. Normal learning laws say: practice makes perfect. But in a child with dyscalculia, this art does not want to come into being. Or at least not to a sufficient extent. What someone else takes for granted or perhaps finds a little tricky, is an obstacle for a pupil with dyscalculia. This book discusses the obstacles hidden in elementary arithmetic.
Usually, the obstacles are in the arithmetic itself, which is more complicated than you might think. However, there are also obstacles that complicate arithmetic in a roundabout way. For instance, dyslexics often cannot learn the tables properly. And children with weak spatial imagination have difficulty with the number line.
Content and structure of the book: aimed at classroom practice
Dyscalculia and arithmetic problems describes how arithmetic is constructed in young children, what are decisive and difficult steps in that construction - for example, steps towards more abstraction - and what can be disrupted in it. As far as possible, the obstacles are presented in the order in which the learner encounters them. Each obstacle has its own chapter, with a more or less similar structure. Milikowski describes what the difficulty is, gives a real-life example, and tells what helps and what doesn't. Sometimes the Obstacle chapters are briefly interrupted by extra information or a game to practise with a student. The book also gives tips on instruments to take away.
