The Delftse methode is a communicative learning method based on principles of natural language acquisition: lots of listening and then imitation.
With the Delftse methode you choose a communicative method that matches the goals of non-native speakers: the ability to understand, speak, write and read in Dutch. Instead of a traditional lesson in which the teacher speaks and the student listens, the Delftse methode revolves around interaction and independent learning. All classes are primarily conversation classes. Students can prepare in their own time; the lesson is for speaking.
In the Delftse methode, the classes are for conversation. The lesson is for speaking, the preparation is done by the student in his own time. Each lesson starts with a text that students prepare at home using the audio and practice materials online. Each text provides topics and themes with corresponding sentences, which serve as conversation material during the lesson.
As a teacher, you are primarily a conversation leader during class. You ask questions, encourage and take turns, but above all, you let the students speak and thus test their text mastery. You use familiar words that have been learned in the text. Give feedback in moderation and only if there is a misunderstanding in meaning. As long as the conversation is flowing, let the students talk and correct or help each other if necessary.
Are you as enthusiastic about the Delft method as we are? Then it's time to see which curriculum suits your student. We have a course for practically educated students who have completed elementary school, and a course for the more educated, theoretically trained student. Check it out:
