For children to keep up at school, it is essential that they have a good command of schoolroom language. This is a common issue that faces foreign children who attend Dutch schools. De taaltrap was developed with these children in mind. In De taaltrap, children ages eight and older learn school-related words and sentences to help them catch up in class as quickly as possible.
De taaltrap consists of a workbook consisting of two parts. The first part contains twenty lessons and is intended for children aged eight to ten. It deals with topics that fit well with the experiences of foreign-speaking children who go to school in the Netherlands for the first time, from counting, the alphabet, colours and clockkeeping to animals, transport, family and, of course, education.
The second part also consists of twenty lessons that build on those in the first part. These lessons are designed for children between ten and twelve. These lessons offer slightly more and more difficult words and exercises. Dutch grammar is also covered in this part.
