Registering for the Staatsexamen NT2
Registering for the Staatsexamen NT2
If you are ready for the Staatsexamen NT2 Programme I or Programme II, you have to register on the website of the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs. You can do the four sections (Lezen, Luisteren, Schrijven and Spreken) at the same time, but you can also do them at different times. When registering, you indicate which parts you will do. You also indicate where and when you want to take the exam. There are five places in the Netherlands where you can take the exam:
- Amsterdam
- Rijswijk
- Rotterdam
- Eindhoven
- Zwolle
Costs of the NT2 State Exam
It costs money to take the Staatsexamen NT2. Per section (Lezen, Luisteren, Schrijven, Spreken) you pay € 50.00. So for the four sections together you pay € 200.00. This price is the same for Programme I and Programme II. You can pay this fee directly online when registering, but you can also pay later.
More information on exam fees can be found on the DUO website.
The exam
You have to use a computer for all exam parts. The Luisteren exam is taken entirely on the computer: you listen to the audio clips with headphones and indicate the correct answer with the mouse. For the Lezen exam, you use a booklet with texts and indicate the correct answer with the mouse. For the Schrijven exam, you use a simple writing programme on the computer to complete the exercises. For the Spreken exam, you listen to audio clips with headphones and read texts on the computer screen. You answer via a microphone.
The exam is governed by rules stating what you may and may not take with you, and what you may do during the exam. For example, you may use certain dictionaries for the Reading and Writing exams, but not for the Listening and Speaking exams. On the website StaatsexamensNT2.nl you can read what is and what is not allowed during the exam.
Exciting: the exam results
Five weeks after you took the exam, the results will be posted on the DUO website. You can view your results by entering the exam number you receive during the exam. But you will also receive the results in a letter sent to your home after six weeks. It is useful to keep this letter if you have passed: for example, if you want to start a study programme, but have not yet received your diploma, you can already show the education authority that you have passed the exam.

Diploma
Have you passed all four sections of the Staatsexamen NT2? Congratulations! You will receive the Diploma Staatsexamen NT2. Have you not yet passed all four sections? If you pass individual exam components (e.g. Lezen and Luisteren), you will receive a certificate for each component. This certificate remains valid indefinitely. If you pass the other parts of the exam later, you can exchange the separate certificates for the Diploma Staatsexamen NT2 via DUO.
Retakes
Sometimes you don't manage to pass an exam in one go. That's unfortunate, but fortunately you can retake the exam. You may retake the exam as many times as you like, but you may only retake one exam item a maximum of three times per year. If you did not pass and you want to retake the exam, prepare well so that you can do better next time. Here are some things you can do to be better prepared:
- Speak and write Dutch as much as possible in your daily life. For example, ask a Dutch friend or acquaintance to speak Dutch together for a few hours a week, or write e-mails in Dutch to people you know, and ask them to correct your texts.
- Read the newspaper, listen to a radio station that talks a lot (e.g. Radio 1) and watch Dutch television programmes (e.g. on channels NPO 1, 2 or 3).
- Take an exam course, if you haven't already done so. Read more about teaching materials on the page ‘Preparing for the Staatsexamen NT2’.
